New Black Does the Old Right

Posted by dave

New Black is everything I always wanted Le Tigre to be. That is, they’re Bikini Kill with organs, distortion, and weird sounds. And a male singer sometimes. And a little bit faster.

Look, they’re nothing like Bikini Kill, but Le Tigre sucks.

A Second Denver Gentlemen Album?

Posted by dave

Oh, it’s out there. Not on iTunes and not on Amazon.com, but it’s out there.

I didn’t believe it at first. The internet made it abundantly clear to me that Introducing… is all we get. There’s no DG Wikipedia page and their official website is a mindfuck with a mailing list. They broke up in 1995, right?

Yes. They got together, they barely toured, they recorded one album in one take, and they quit. Sure, that’s what every bio I’ve ever read says, but Smooch Records has a self-titled Denver Gentlemen record for sale.

Apparently, in 2005, without a single ad or announcement, the Gentlemen reformed and recorded another album. Jeffrey-Paul Norlander, DG frontman, either loves mystery or hates recognition.

If it weren’t for Smooch Records, you’d probably have to rob homes in Denver to find this record. They’ve got the skinny on the Denver Gentlemen, though, and there seems to be a third album in the works.  Maybe this time they’ll tell someone about it.

Here’s a track from the album:

Electronic Music From Binärpilot

Posted by jon

Binärpilot is the electonic music project of Alexander Støver. Alexander hails from Norway, and makes some downright fun music. It’s fragmented, video gamey, and just a little bit silly. Even better, it’s all free, and you can download his entire discography as a torrent via the Pirate Bay.

“Goof” off of the album Defrag:

Zach Condon - Beirut = Minimalist Beirut

Posted by dave

You might think I’m being smarmy with that title up there. I’m not. Beirut is incredible, and Zach Condon is basically the whole band, but he seems to be writing and recording under his given name now. The horns of Beirut remain, but not the drums, and he’s thrown in a few ambient keyboards and echoey electronic sounds. Give it a listen.

[Swedish Hardcore Bands] Are [Not] Fucking Dead

Posted by dave

Refused might be, and i might often cry about that, but apparently punk and hardcore are far from gone in Umea . Masshsyteri seem particularly interested in bringing loud n’ twangy back. Plus they scream in Swedish, so… Damn right.

Artichoke Really Likes Highland Park

Posted by dave

As they should. In Los Angeles, a neighborhood that feels normal is much harder to find than a neighborhood that feels angry, rich, empty, or hilarious. Mr. T’s Bowl is in Highland Park. And so is Footsie’s. That’s enough right there.

Any way, to show their love for such a place, Artichoke released an album of 8 songs, every one about the HP. This one’s called “Highland Park”. (Seriously.)

We’ve been Artichoke fans for a long time. You’ll find some great songs on their old eviltv page. Also check their myspace.

Toben Seymour Music Video Featuring an Octopus

Posted by jon

We used to feature Toben Seymour’s work a lot on the old site, so I decided to take a look at what he’s been up to and found this video for Moby. Let me just quote the description from YouTube: “An octopus disguises himself as a human and wanders around New York City looking for a club.”

Rademacher: Loud n’ Friendly Rock n’ Roll

Posted by dave

If you haven’t had the pleasure of witnessing Rademacher ’s dance-a-riffic distorto-welcoming indie rock live show, give this a listen. They caravaned down to Los Angeles from their home town of Fresno, CA for a show at the Spaceland and the venue made an album out of it. This song’s called "What Yr Used to Back Home".

You’ll find more tracks on their website and myspace , or you can buy the album here .

Cockamamie Jamie Raps Alone

Posted by dave

Jamie’s not just a serial rapist, he raps, too! After years as one half of the Argyle Pimps, he’s now gone solo on the side. “NyQuil” is a personal favorite.

Pogo, this song’s 19-year-old Australian creator, describes it as "an electronic piece of which 90% is composed using sounds recorded from the Disney film ‘Alice In Wonderland’. "
